The Story Behind Kamps Pallets
They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. For Kamps Pallets founder Bernie Kamps, digging up that treasure took a little extra elbow grease.
“As a 17-year-old kid, I bought a small dump truck and launched my garbage business – and at the landfills, I saw opportunity staring me in the face,” says Bernie.
He started purchasing old and broken pallets from area landfills, repairing and then re-selling them – an innovative idea in 1973, during the beginning of the recycling movement.
“Recycling was starting to come on strong at the same time the price of wood was skyrocketing,” he says. “I called it ‘harvesting the urban forest.'”
Today, that spirit of innovation is still alive and well at the family owned and operated company. Kamps offers pallet solutions to customers nationwide, building relationships with quality products and cementing them with integrity, commitment and respect.
“We are very responsive to our customers’ needs, and we’re a leader in driving down their costs,” Bernie says.
Kamps Pallets handles a large variety of businesses across the country. We recognize every company has a specialized, specific set of needs. We see each customer – from large entities like Alro Steel, Amazon, Amway, Gordon Food Service and UPS to local companies who are serving the food, automotive, manufacturing and health care industries – as an exciting puzzle, anticipating issues, solving problems and creating innovative solutions just for them.
“Because we’re rooted in operations, we know how to run a plant – which means we’re living and breathing the same challenges as our customers, day in and day out,” Bernie says.
Kamps doesn’t just respect our customers – we respect the materials used in every single pallet, from start to finish. From delivery to collection to reconditioning and back again, we make the best use of materials throughout the lifecycle. Even pallets beyond the brink of repair are repurposed into mulch, so nothing goes to waste.
Now in its second generation of leadership, Kamps Pallets has grown from one hardworking visionary to a nationwide team of more than 850 employees – all who believe the treasure of a satisfied customer is worth the extra elbow grease.
